Dry Eye FAQ's

We have compiled a list of the most common questions that we receive from our patients in order to create a resource for anyone wondering about Dry Eye Disease and relief from it. However, always feel free to call or come in with any other questions or concerns.

  • What should I do first to when looking into help for my dry eyes?
    Call and make an appointment with our Dry Eye Specialist, Dr. Nicole Legare, at Mt. Pleasant Eye Surgeons to see if you are a candidate for Autologous Serum Eye Drops.
  • How does the Sweet Tears (Autologous Serum Eye Drops) program work?
    In order to get involved in the Sweet Tears Program... here is what you need to do: Discuss your Dry Eye Symptoms with Dr. Nicole Legare, at Mt. Pleasant Eye Surgeons. She will need to issue (e-scribe) a prescription for the Autologous Serum Eye Drops or Sweet Tears, and for labs to be drawn. Once prescriptions have been received, Sweetgrass Pharmacy will contact you and coordinate a blood draw. Your Sweet Tears will be ready the day after your blood draw! Sweetgrass pharmacy will contact you to inform you that your eye drops are ready for pick up. Blood draws can be shipped to the pharmacy, and final completed eye drops can be shipped to you, if needed.
  • How much do Sweet Tears (Autologous Serum Eye Drops) cost?
    The cost for you customized Sweet Tears is $275 for a 45 day supply. This charge is out of pocket and can not be covered through insurance. However, we can accept payment via HSA or FSA as well as cash or credit.
  • How long will it take me to get Sweet Tears (Autologous Serum Eye Drops)?
    Our priority is getting Sweet Tears to you in 24 hours from the date of your blood draw. We work to bring you relief from your Dry Eye Symptoms as soon as possible.
  • How much blood is drawn?
    This will be determined by Dr. Nicole Legare, but it is often less than a few ounces.
  • How should I store my Sweet Tears (Autologous Serum Eye Drops)
    The eye drops should be kept cold, in the refrigerator. You must discontinue use and discard that bottle after seven days. Store all remaining bottles, upright in the freezer. the bottles stored in the freezer can remain there for six months.
  • Do Sweet Tears need to be refrigerated?
    Yes. Sweet Tears are made from biological material and are preservative free. Without proper refrigeration the could support bacteria growth and contaminate your eye drops. Carry your eye drops in an insulated cooler with ice if you are going to be out for more than an hour. For at home care, store your eye drops in the refrigerator and your extra bottles in the freezer.
  • Are Sweet Tears covered by insurance?
    Sweet Tears are a self-pay custom service. We do accept HSA/FSA, cash or credit as payment for your eye drops.
